Photographs give a unique insight into the past. They enable us to imagine more vividly what has gone before. The scale of social, political and technological change which has occurred over a relatively short period of time soon becomes apparent. Images of the 1960s civil rights marches in Northern Ireland are an example of photographic history. Snapshots of street politics in action illustrate the nature of the political struggle in that part of the world in the recent past. The young political activists who carried campaigning banners and manned the barricades have now grown old or are no longer with us. |
